expresso bongo
Bongo drums were popularised in 1950s Britain by Edmundo Ros, who I enjoyed as a kid, his weekly radio shows being a favourite of my grandparents.
I need Help!
Creating music is exciting but getting listeners is hard work - and needs teamwork………
HOW I produced 52 tracks in 2020
What just happened? I produced and released a track each week in 2020. Here's what I've learned so far. It's taken me around 20 hours to produce each track, composing, performing, recording and mixing.
Syncopation
I thought this week's track "The New Me" was a fairly straightforward, 8 to the bar, latin jazz tune - until a musician friend asked what time signature it's in! Because I've been messing around with rhythm since I was a kid, half the time I don't even realise I'm "syncopating"
Zen railway modelling
The title popped into my head then grew into a piece. In this crazy mixed up world we all need something we can put into some sort of order, make sense of.
RADIO EDITS: PROBLEM OR OPPORTUNITY?
Now I'm beginning to get some radio play the issue of radio edits arises. If you don't edit tracks yourself radio stations fade them out anyway after 2-3 minutes. I don't believe in waffle but it's hard to conceive of some great music working under that constraint.
West Pennine breakdown
These moors smaller in scale than the Southern Pennine moors, more varied and slightly less boggy! An exciting range of archaeology can be found there, much of it from the early industrial revolution; water driven mills, usually in ruins and small mines for lead, cobalt, coals and many other minerals.
A cautionary tale about gambling
I've just finished work on a track called "Gambling Train" which features the wonderful Laura Taylor on vocal and another fine sax solo from Ian Ellis.
Ukelele culture
There are some virtuoso players out there covering everything from bluegrass to Bach but even more impressive is the open minded feel of the groups, encouraging learners and people sharing their music for the first time.
Track of the week; why? how? so what?
Over the 2019 Christmas holiday I took stock of new music I was working on. There were around 100 compositions I quite liked and had recorded.
